In Creativity, Defining and Measuring, Mental Objects, Politics

In 2013, the UK Department of Media, Culture and Sport (DCMS) launched a consultation to determine how to define and measure the creative industries. Hasan Bakhshi of the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) had led the team that produced the [Dynamic Mapping of the Creative Industries] which codified the ‘Intensity’ approach of the Greater London Authority (GLA) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT), demonstrated its practicability and exhibited, for the UK, a set of statistical indicators for jobs, output, occupational classifications and industrial classifications that set the intensity method on a solid scientific foundation. This allowed us to make a solid, evidence-based and methodology-based proposal which, with modifications I consider small, was adopted by DCMS, establishing what was, in effect, an international standard.

This post contains only the original DCMS request, because of its historical interest
