Invited to UNAM in the winter of 2019, I arrived in Mexico on the same day as Evo Morales. Deposed and threatened with assassination in the Bolivian coup, he escaped to Mexico with the valiant assistance of a Mexican airlines pilot who, to avoid being shot down over the airspace of hostile countries, flew him to safety on a route so circuitous that it took over 36 hours to complete. While I was there, a fake black block attack organised by the far right pillaged the University bookshop and set fire to the Chancellor’s office. Such events lent a certain edge to what would could have been a more leisurely academic exchange. These are the times we live in.
Slides, and this video. A separate post contains a presentation I made on the relation between the creative industries and industrial development.
