The case for pluralism as a new foundation for economics. This definitive article brings together the arguments advanced in AHE (Association for Heterodox Economics) responses to the stifling and monotheoretic orthodoxy imposed on economics by the Economics establishment both at world level and in individual countries. It proposes assertive pluralism, a term coined by Andy Denis, as an alternative foundation.

The paper was first developed in a workshop organised by Wolfram Elsner in Bremen, 26-27 June 2009, and entitled  ‘Assessing economic research in a European Context: The Future of heterodox economics in a non-Pluralist Mainstream Environment’ and then published in a special edition of the International Review of Economics Education edited by Andy Denis. It should be cited as Freeman, A. 2009. The Economists of Tomorrow: the case for a Pluralist Subject Benchmark Statement for Economics. International Review of Economics Education:  Volume 8 Issue 2, December 2009. pp23-40.

This post comprises the IREE article and a supporting slideshow presented at the Bremen workshop.
